While disagreeing with a colleague who believed Britain's floods should be blamed on gay marriage, a European Parliament hopeful thinks business owners should be able to turn away LGBTs and women

A UKIP politician believes business owners should be allowed to refuse to serve gay people.
Donna Edmunds, a Lewis district councillor and European Parliament hopeful, said all business owners should be allowed to refuse service to anyone they want for whatever reason they want.
Under UK law, the Equality Act 2010 protects people who access services from direct discrimination. This applies to disability, pregnancy, race, religion, or if they are LGBT.
Responding to a post on an internet forum, Edmunds said all business owners should be allowed to refuse service, including if they are gay or a woman.
She had been asked if she supported UKIP councillor David Silvester who blamed Britain’s floods on England and Wales legalizing gay marriage.
After saying she did not agree with him, Edmunds said: ‘I believe that all business owners, Christian, Muslim, gay, straight, should be allowed to withhold their services from whomever that choose whenever they choose.
‘It’s their business. Why should they be forced to serve or sell to anyone?’
When asked to confirm her comments by Brighton local paper The Argus, Edmunds defended her statement by saying: ‘I’m a libertarian so I don’t think the state should have a role on who business owners serve.
‘I wouldn’t refuse to serve gay people. I’m not saying their position is a correct one. I’m saying they should be free to make that choice themselves.’
Nigel Carter, chairman of Brighton and Hove UKIP, said her views did not represent the majority of those involved with the eurosceptic party.
Across the Atlantic, Arizona’s governor has just vetoed a law that would have allowed businesses to turn away gay people on religious grounds.
Saying it could lead to ‘unintended and negative consequences’, the Republican governor Jan Brewer added: ‘I have not heard one example in Arizona where a business owner's religious liberty has been violated.’
